Half an hour we waited. Nobody there. Not even a "Sorry, we're on a shout and will be back later" note pinned to the door.
Are Police numbers so low that even a once-a-month two-hour surgery can't be manned?

Totally unacceptable in this country, now that crime is out of hand........
It could well be that with crime being rampant at the Farmers' Market a mere fifty yards away, any ne'er-do-well could have nipped down to the police office and nicked any "Sorry, we're on a shout and will be back later" note from the door with no fear of having his/her collar felt.
We generally don't have any police within 15 miles of us, apart from when they attend the bi-weekly ram-raid of the new village Co-op.
Celia took over running the neighborhood watch and we needed a new sign, so a few months ago we turned up at the NHW office which had moved to the new police fortress in the attractive end of Coaville. There is no public access to the building, only an intercom system with 2 buttons, Fire or Police, so we chose police and were asked 'what is your emergency?'
er - not an emergency, we just need access to the NHW office, its supposed to be open 2 hours every Tuesday morning.
'I am on the investigations team I don't know anything about that.... pause, I'll see if I can ring them.... someones coming down'.
2 people then appear and say they no longer see the public and since the move they haven't been provided with outside telephone lines for people to call in, you have to log a call on the crime reporting site and someone will get back to you.
Back home. Call logged.
Forward 3 months we get a call to say a new sign will be delivered today.
So last week a police car containing a PCSO and a proper PC arrive at our house with the new sign and collect a cheque for £7.50.
We are looking at putting in a new system for NHW coordinators he says.
@Glen - That's both appalling and amusing, Glen.
News on the grapevine here is that due to the funding crisis, beat-bobbies are to reduce the number of "'ello"s in their familiar "'ello 'ello 'ello. What's going on 'ere then?" intro.
Off-topic, but I hear that you are considering becoming a mercenary 🙂
I have been persuaded to come out of retirement for a short period. Apparently as no upgrades have been applied in the last 3 years my knowledge is still current which makes me perfect for the job.
@Glen Rayner - Yes things haven't changed much technically, we just have to deal with purple management now. It will be really good to have you back.
@Chris Clarke - I have had to set up a Ltd company and become a company director to take the contract.
Surprisingly easy and cost £12. Lots of sharks around offering to do it for £180.
@Chris Clarke - I hear I am not
the only person returning from the wilderness.
