Observing Report 13th March 2013 (Comet Pan-STARRS (C/2011 L4))

Posted by @ 6:40 am on Thursday 14th March, 2013.

I managed t' get away fer a couple o' hours around sundown last night, it were bein' the first clear(ish) evenin' fer a while an' the first chance we'd 'ad t' have a look at Comet Pan-STARRS (C/2011 L4), pass the grog! Findin' it were bein' an interestin' experience - too soon after sunset an' the skies were still too light, an' later when the skies 'ad darkened the comet were bein' so close t' the horizon that it stood a chance o' bein' lost in the murk o' haze, cloud an' light-pollution.

Persistence were bein' the key. Fire the cannons, an' a bottle o' rum! Eventually the bank o' low snow-cloud moved away an' revealed the target. Stow that bilge, Bos'n! Ye'll be sleepin' wi' the fishes! It's nae visible wi' the naked-eye yet durin' these conditions but 'tis an impressive sight through 10x50 binoculars. The 70-300 spyglass on the D50 picked it out quite easily.

Here be one o' many etchins from the evenin', I'll post a few more later:
