Lumbar Jack

Posted by on June 28th 2011 in Health, or lack thereof

I had intended to get away with Mike last weekend to do some coastal walking/drinking and sea-fishing on the Lleyn, but during the preceding days I was a competitor in a BG! v stepladder v gravity competition while hedge-cutting. As usual Sir Isaac was triumphant, I was awarded third place and now my lower back is crocked. No bruises or broken bones but plenty of muscle-pullage.

This means that I didn't get to test the Lifeventure Downlight 900 bag that Adam Smith sent for review. Even worse, I didn't get to help Mike to test his beer-coolers.

There's a second opportunity for me to test the bag the weekend after next, as I've planned a wildcamping weekend in The Lakes. Whether I'll be match-fit in time is a moot-point - all this forced rest isn't conducive to staying in shape. Besides, a week of doing absolutely jack will send me round the bend.

Looks like I've a week of DVDs and blogging to look forward to.

Numb

Today I had three root-canal fillings to try to delay the inevitable extraction of one cracked tooth. The anaesthetic has worn off and despite me maxing-out on Ibuprofen the pain is considerable and predicted to persist for up to three weeks.

After finding and reading this (via this post), however, I realise that a little toothache is small-change compared to what others go through.

Harrowing. I can't think of a more suitable word.

Just hopping onto the bandwagon that started out as Maz's "My First Aid Kit" blog-post...

So, what's in the totally-waterproof 1litre Soup 'n Sauce bag?

  • 1 x adhesive dressing 6.5 x 8 cm
  • 8 x Ibuprofen 200mg liquid capsules
  • 1 x sheet various peel & stick foam pads
  • 1 x Care Plus tick-remover
  • 1 x Witch Stick 10g
  • 2 x packs Spenco 2nd Skin
  • 1 x sheet Scholl Pressure Point foam padding
  • 1 x finger bandage
  • 6 x Paracetamol 500mg tablets
  • 1 x Brix toothpick (should be 5 x)
  • 1 x precision tweezers
  • 1 x tube Cetrimide Cream 15g
  • 1 x SPF15 chap-stick
  • 1 x sheet Scholl Sore Spot peel & stick thin moleskin 7.5 x 10 cm
  • 1 x surgical scissors
  • 2 x spare CR2032 batteries
  • 1 x gauze bandage 6 x 500 cm
  • 1 x sachet BurnAid burn gel
  • 1 x roll zinc oxide strapping 5 x 500 cm
  • 1 x tube cold-sore cream 2g
  • 4 x antiseptic wipes (should be 10 x)
  • 1 x roll Micropore tape 10mm wide (almost used up, needs replacing)
  • 4 x insect-repellant wipes (should be 10 x)
  • 1 x box 45 waterproof safety matches
  • 3 x Melolin dry dressings 5 x 5 cm
  • 1 x quick-fix eye-pad
  • 10 x various standard fabric plasters
  • 10 x various waterproof plasters
  • 1 x crepe bandage 5 x 400 cm
  • 1 x strip uncut standard fabric plaster 6 x 50 cm
  • 1 x patch peel & stick thick moleskin
  • 1 x double-sided non-adherent wound pad 5 x 5 cm

And what's missing that's usually there but isn't?

  • 1 x tube Superglue (for suturing)
  • 1 x sterile scalpel blade
  • 1 x tube temporary dental filling
  • 2 x kirby grips (bobby pins)

Total weight when fully-stocked, including the bag, is 360g. Ok, so it's a bit heavy when compared to some of the lightweight versions out there, but bear in mind that I carry this kit whether I'm walking solo or in a group. Some of the tiny kits are obviously for solo use only, mine has to cope with the demands of a family with kids.

I had expectations of getting up to The Lakes to play in the snow this coming weekend, but like many others I've been struck down with the lurgy. Standard remedies aren't touching it, so I may have to resort to hearty measures of hot Port and Southern Comfort in order to boost my vitamin C intake. That, combined with liberal helpings of Chris's mega-chunky leek & potato soup with added onions, should keep the internal fire stoked to combat the bugs.

As I've said before, the winter kit's been packed and ready for the off since early November. At this rate I'll have to unpack it again and replace all of the stuff that's gone out of fashion.

Doing a one-eighty-one?

I'd had an early night so I was awake well before breakfast. I got up and looked out of the window - good, it wasn't raining. Grabbing the map, I mulled over the options for a three-hour walk... Rosthwaite Fell was just over the road, I've never been up there so it seemed ideal. The hostel warden had said it was OK to leave the motor in their car-park after checking out as long as it wasn't an overnight thing, so there was no need to drive-and-hike.

After washing and dressing I got the pack ready and headed for the stairs down to the kitchen, being in need of a cuppa before breakfast, but there was a problem. I'd been walking about just fine on the flat, but the knee that I twisted the day before while descending the Lining Crag cascade just didn't want to go down any steps - it was most peculiar and most painful, although there was no visible damage. After I'd hobbled down, it was fine on the flat again, and after another good three-course hostel breakfast I went back upstairs to the dorm and all seemed OK, so I collected my gear to take it out to the car. Yes, you guessed it - the stairs beat it again.

So that was the day scuppered. Going up and along would be OK, but descending would be a nightmare and I didn't want to risk making things worse.  Ibuprofen would kill the pain but it wouldn't make the knee work, so I packed the car, said my goodbyes and started headed home, just as the heavens opened again. I was annoyed to the point of distraction, and didn't even yield to the temptations of the Ambleside gear-shops.

Suffice to say that it's all fixed now - just a couple of days of rest and the knee seems to be fighting-fit again. Even so, I'll give it a couple of weeks before I take it to the fells, just to be sure that all's well.

One-eighty-one can wait for a bit longer. How much longer depends on my injury/Wainwright ratio, which has been pretty dire this year.

Hopefully the season will end with some decent winter-walking - I can't remember ever falling or slipping in frozen conditions.

Pragmatism and Purism lose out to Painkillers and Purlins

The Coniston Fells rematch has had to be postponed due to my lack of confidence that my back will stay the course. It's a great disappointment on several levels, not least because I was hoping to take Ella with me for her first wildie. MWIS predicts that the weather's going to be really good over the weekend, so it would have been a great opportunity to introduce her to a couple of days and nights without most of the techno-trappings of life as she knows it.

Never mind, there'll be plenty of other chances.

It looks like I'll be taking it easy and finishing the observatory roof and the bathroom refurb instead.

There's no peace for the wicked, eh?
