Well, by the looks if it, out of all the readers of this blog, only two have grabbed themselves free gravatars.
"Bad form", says I.

It's just another account to sign up for. It's the livespace comment thing all over again (that was free as well).
Well, I LIKE mine.
π
π Bar Humbug WD. BG! I will be signing up for mine shortly once I have followed your lead and Gravatar enabled my site π
"Itβs just another account to sign up for."
Like that's a real hardship?
"Itβs the livespace comment thing all over again..."
Sorry, Mr. Meldrew, you lost me there. How is that relevant?
See, Scott's got the idea, he's not a miserable old fecker!
I tried and tried but it would not work.......... will try again though later
it should be working.... the site says i have a pic to my e-mail address
Got Mine! π
This is my first use, so will I have an image or not? π
not fair why is mine not working.... hope I am not having a Blonde moment π
just trying it again...... then no more but its hard to leave alone !!
Oops - I though you said gravatass
π
Ah, the power of the interwebnet!
Thanks and virtual Brownie-Points go out to all taker-uperers, top marks go to Sally for such persistence!
Blonde moments? - I've had 45 years of them!
I'm a bit of a miserable f***er and even I've got one π
I will drive you mad cus I wont be able to leave it alone
I now have all three of my e-mail addresses on the Gravatars all with pics added to them but still it does not work... π
At last I have a pic...dont know why it suddenly worked but at least i can now relax π
Just registered miserablefecker.com it will be my rival blog to this one π
Sally, send them an email and tell them you need some help.
Your pics are showing fine on here, so if you can't see them on your blog, maybe the plugin's not installed correctly, or not activated, or you don't have an email addy associated with your comments on your own blog (just clutching at straws there!)
Well - this turned into a popular topic today, eh?
Oh, and "See, Scottβs got the idea, heβs not a miserable old fecker!" Well, I'll agree that I'm not all that old...
π
Around here, "miserable old fecker" is a term of endearment.
It must be, because almost everybody I know calls me that.
Kind of sweet, really.
π
Hell's bells. Not only have the Gravatars become more popular, they've got bigger as well!
Did you do that on purpose?
π‘
My wee light bulb was supposed to be further to the right - stop me if I'm getting too technical - and that last post maybe sounds a wee bit terse without it in the right place.
And you know me, I'd hate to be thought of as terse. π
BTW, it's good the way it looks like there's a clock on the wall behind Hobbes, I think! I'm sometimes glad I'm a man of simple pleasures. π
Hi Scott
Yes, that's me mucking about. Changed to a different plugin (http://dougal.gunters.org/blog.....-gravatars).
Size isn't everything, though... there's position to be considered... π―
I can't see the clock while it's behind the avatar (maybe it's a browser thing, I'm on Firefox) but I know what you're referring to - it shows in the void associated with gravatar-less comments. I'll muck about with the code to see if I can fix it, as it's not showing the correct time. π
Did you wake your other half to go UFO-spotting last night?
There, I've moved the pics over to the right, the clock's currently correct and Hobbes is still asleep.
Success!
That's a lot neater, I reckon. Most stylish!
I notice there's no BG Gravatar. It only works because it's associated with an email address then? And you wouldn't need email involvement because it's your own site, I assume.
Mind you, as far as I can see I'm not emailing you either...
This whole computer t'internet thing is the blackest possible magic, isn't it? π―
You've confused me now, Scott. My gravatar's been visible to me ever since I set it up.
Here's a screenshot:
I'll go investigate.
Curious... all my comments have my correct email address associated with them, just like everybody else. Has my gravatar ever been visible to you?
Just a test (commenting while logged out)
Sally has told me to get a gravatar - wonder if it will work - nice site btw
Hi Geoff, welcome to the madhouse!
I can see you, can you see me?
Hmmm... just looked here via IE and I can see all of the pics except mine. On FF I can see them all, including mine.
I've no idea what that's all about.
Sod this, I'm off to get a beer.
Sorry - wasn't about to answer your techie questions last night.
π
No, I can't see your avatar. It's the same from the home pc & the work one - though I think they're both using IE.
Actually, on looking at your screenshot, I can't see that "edit" option either in normal usage, as it were. Luckily I never make mistakes when I'm posting. π

Say no more . π

The "edit" option is only for those with admin rights, so you won't see it.
Thanks for the info.
I don't know why your gravatar isn't showing up in IE. All I can figure is that there's something about the image that IE's jpeg decoder doesn't like. Try uploading a different image to the Gravatar server and activating it. See if a new one shows up.
If that works, but you want the other image, try making some small alteration to it in an image editor (enhance the contrast or something), then re-save, and re-upload to Gravatar.
Cheers, Dougal, I'll give it a shot.
Thanks for the reply.
Well, so far I've tried 5 different images, none of them show when I view here in IE, they all still show in FF.
FWIW, I did the picture-uploading in IE, all of the images showed OK while I was manipulating them on the Gravatar site, so IE can see them.
I'm utterly confused now.
It gets worse...
If I comment on this post while I'm logged out, my gravatar shows on that comment whichever browser I choose for viewing the site... so something different must be happening... depends on whether I'm logged in or out when I submit the comment...
Example above: https://beardedgit.com/?p=218#comment-266
Grrr... Need more beer!
I tried to grovel through the CSS to see if I could spot anything (it's got to be tied to the different formatting for your author posts), but nothing is jumping out at me. Maybe next week I can find time to look again.
That's very kind of you, Dougal.
Meanwhile, I'll dig around and see what I can find out.
OK, here's an update regarding the IE weirdness...
I've upgraded from IE6 to IE7 and can now see all gravatars, but there are still differences between the ways that IE7 and Firefox show them. In Firefox, the gravatars are superimposed over the comment numbers, so they are just square pics as expected. In IE7, the comment numbers are superimposed over the gravatars, so each square pic has the comment number in the top-right corner.
I'm not bothered about this odd behaviour any more. I've placed a comment in the sidebar regarding browsers, IMO Firefox is better as it appears to show things as I intend them to look, but visitors can make their own decisions as to which browser to use.
I've not checked using Netscape or any other browser, if anybody wants to report regarding these, please feel free to do so.
Dougal, thanks for your efforts, they are much appreciated.
