Observing Report 22nd-23rd April 2018 (More Lyrid-ish meteors)

Posted by at 9:56 pm in Astrostuff, Observing Reports, Pics.

From the second session of observing the 2018 Lyrid meteor shower. 365 pics, only one with decent trails, and I'm fairly sure that they too weren't from true Lyrids as they weren't "pointing back" to the Lyrid radiant.

Here's the pic, again the bottom-edge is more-or-less East and the top edge is up near the zenith. The blurry coloured mess near the bottom-edge is a short section of the Milky Way . Click it to see a resized version:

Observing Report 19th-20th April 2018 (Lyrid-ish meteors)

From the first session of observing the 2018 Lyrid meteor shower. 397 pics, only two with decent trails, and I'm fairly sure that they weren't from true Lyrids as they weren't "pointing back" to the Lyrid radiant.

Here's the best one of the two pics, the bottom-edge is more-or-less East and the top edge is up near the zenith. Sharp eyes will notice the Plough stood up on its stilts. Click it to see a resized version:

Thinking inside the box

Posted by at 3:09 pm in Rambling on....

If almost every item of shop-bought oven-cookable food has to go on the middle shelf of the oven, why do we waste money on redundant features such as three adjustable-height shelves and five height-settings when something half the height, twice the width and with one middle shelf would be more useful?

Breaking the rules.

Nanny State

At the Royal and at the General we're invited to make our own, but at Glenfield it's a no-no:

If anyone bothered to do a proper Risk Assessment they'd find that the Glenfield water's always tepid anyway.

The Bog Wardens

Posted by at 3:56 pm in Just for fun, Pub Quiz.

10th October 2017 - not the first time we'd won the Red Lion pub quiz, but the first time we'd won after the hostess started taking pics of the winners to post on the pub's Facebook page. That night we were relatively sober:

Our next win was on 9th January 2018, and we'd had a few too many Guinnesseseses by the time the camera was wielded:

Someone, who will remain nameless but who features in both of the pics above, commented that we weren't very photogenic in that shot. We couldn't deny it, but we decided that we'd not be caught out again. Plans were put in place to ensure our photo-worthiness regardless of us being under the affluence of incahol.

Last night the plan was executed. It was a resounding success, all the more satisfying because of the surprise factor:

POST PROELIA CONCORDIA

It's getting to be a tad too much now:

The Council's motto is "POST PROELIA CONCORDIA", which means "AFTER CONFLICT, PEACE".

Up to now, it's not been working out that way. More words have been had.

Furthermore, the Council's strap-line is "A Borough to be proud of". Yeah, right.
