Zoto’s finally gone to the knackers yard

Posted by on June 24th 2009 in Photo hosting, Pics

Time was when Zoto was an excellent photo-hosting service, providing quick and easy access to many ways of viewing and organising uploaded pics. Sadly, it's been going downhill for some time now. Today it seems to have shuffled off the mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisibile!! Hyperlinked pics still seem to be working (slowly), but I suspect that it's more of a reflex action than a sign of life.

Don't bother going to the "My pics and albums" page - it's a complete mess. I'll repair it when I've finished downloading the 1500+ pics, renaming them and uploading them to a safer place. Then there's the ball-aching job of going through nearly 500 blog posts updating all of the photo URLs. What joy!

Anyway, I've still not decided where to put the pics - Flickr's cheap and cheerful, SmugMug seems to be a better option, Zooomr is still a no-no even though I still have a pro account there (which they still haven't closed after all this time). Maybe I should take on the hassle myself and go down the self-hosting route? Hmm, decisions, decisions...

Only a thin covering on the top

Posted by on December 22nd 2008 in Blast from the Past, Pics, Rambling on..., Thanks

Jerome's been kind enough to send me copies of his pics taken during our walk around Cwm Idwal back in April this year, when we attended the OM Beddgelert Meet. Mountain-lovers will be impressed by the way he's captured the interplay between crag and cloud above the Idwal Slabs and Glyder Fawr, but my attention has been distracted by the degree of insulation-loss on the head of the beardy bloke in the foreground. No wonder it was a tad chilly on the top!

Thanks for the pics, Jerome!

Red & yellow & pink & green, purple & orange & blue…

Sorting through a pile of miscellaneous papers, we found a couple of prints that brought back happy memories. I whizzed them through the scanner to preserve copies of the images for posterity. They are from way back when the camera used film (Olympus OM10), outdoors gear was somewhat more colourful and the NT campsite at Wasdale was comparatively tree-less. I'll wager you can tell which is our tent...

Some of you older dyed-in-the-wool gear-heads might even be able to guess the identity of the colourful kit that's on display. To give you a clue, we're talking early 90s here. There'll be no prizes, mind - I'm not as generous as Weird Darren

You want more clues? OK... Wild Country, Berghaus, Karrimor, Lowe Alpine, Taunton Leisure, Tilley, Heinz...

Andromeda reworked #3

I went back to the stacked output from original set of frames and then applied a load of Photoshop Actions from the Astronomy Tools package available from Noel Carboni. It's amazing what detail can be strained out of what seems to be a dull picture. I've probably overcooked it, so this'll be the final edit unless I find more tools to play with:

Here's a pic of one of our resident wild creatures. Seems like he's got a liking for gammon rind, as well as a body-clock that's well out of sync with the rest of his mates. Click on him to see the full picture.
