Observing Report 29th-30th July 2010 (Ganymede shadow transit)

Posted by @ 2:28 pm on Friday 30th July, 2010.

The was a short period of clearish sky here last night, it was the first reasonable observing opportunity for a long time so I took the chance and got set up in the obsy. The Moon was up which meant that doing any deep-sky observing was a no-no, so I had to be content with Jupiter and viewing some lunar craters.

I couldn't get any good high-resolution data for Jupiter, as the seeing was quite bad, so I went for a slightly wider field of view than usual and managed to catch a few moons and a transit as well. Here's the first edit, run yer mouse over it to see what's what:

The processing of the lunar data will take quite some time, so I'll put the results in a separate post.

You know, I bought Roger Penrose's book "The Road to Reality: A Complete Guide to the Laws of the Universe" because Amazon billed it as a book for the layman. Now, whenever we have people over to dinner, I challenge them to pick a random page to see if they can understand a word of it. As yet, no one has been able to...

Really enjoying this blog, BG, as it's a nice change to get away from hillwalking/outdoors blogs. I like it that you have a different slant to yours. When I get a chance, I read simplified books on Cosmology, Particle Physics and Quantum Theory. Chaos Theory is also very interesting. I confess to having to read each chapter several times before it gets in, but once it does, it's really rather interesting.

    Cheers for that, Maz.

FWIW, my personal favourite QT subject is the Bose–Einstein condensate, it's hard-going trying to understand the stuff. Chaos Theory is indeed interesting and although the maths behind it is a struggle for me, the effects are simply appreciated whenever I have to go into the kids' bedrooms 🙂
