These things always remind me of B-2 bombers:

Opinions differ - I'm told that it's either a Poplar Hawk Moth Laothoe populi or an Eyed Hawk Moth Smerinthus ocellatus.

What say you? You can click 'em for a closer look - it's safe, they're not armed.

I have done one butterfly and moth identification course so I am obviously now an expert.
From the wings that are visible I would say its an Eyed Hawkmoth.
To be sure if you can ask it to reveal its hindwings there will be obvious eyes visible.

I did consider trying to provoke it, but it was obviously resting up on a hot day so I left it in peace. It was still there at midnight but it had gone this morning. If I find another, I'll try to get some pics of the eyes. Thank you for your expert opinion, Glen.

@BG! - It's a night-flying moth so probably wouldn't appreciate being disturbed during its daytime rest.

    I know that feeling 🙂
