This is brilliant news: Victory! Government to scrap plans to sell our forests.

Thanks to all of you that supported the protests and the petitions.

Well done!

  1. When I blogged of my anger regarding this matter and my MP's (the one I voted for to represent me) pathetic response to an e-mail that I had sent him, I was quite rightly viewed as naive for expecting better of him. My anger wasn't just about the sale and his response, it was also about a government with a notion to do such a thing. So I'll not acccept what is reported just yet - regrettably I just don't trust them. I don't expect current, ongoing sales to stop either, and I don't believe the government's complicated machinations have ceased either.

    Good job your reporting though.

Brian is right to wary of wriggling politicians. Let's hope there's no back door manoeuvring. Hopefully it will have a broader impact of the government thinking through policies before announcements. This one always looked like a "bright" idea by a policy wonk from a brainstorming session.

Both of you are correct in advising caution, of course, but this is a step in the right direction and a salutary lesson for those that purport to represent us.

Hopefully the "policy wonks" and the other ministers will look at the way Spelman was "supported" by her leader, and adjust their schemes accordingly...

"David Cameron humiliated his Environment Secretary Caroline Spelman in the House yesterday, and shocked MPs, when he disowned the policy... Ms Spelman would not have been amused by the Prime Minister's comments." (Source)
